Channels (C-Channels, U-Channels)

FRP C- and U-shaped channels are open “hat” profiles with parallel flanges, pultruded to create rigid support sections. These channels combine high load capacity with very low weight and corrosion immunity. Ideal for use as purlins, racking beams or edge trim, FRP channels resist chemical and moisture attack that would corrode steel. Their constant cross-section simplifies installation (they can be cut and bolted like steel).

Key Features

  • Excellent corrosion and chemical resistance (impervious to acids, alkalis, salt spray)
  • High strength-to-weight ratio (lightweight, yet can carry heavy loads)
  • Non-magnetic and insulating (safe for electrical or telecom applications)
  • Available with UV-protective veil and fire retardant resin

Benefits

  • Eliminates rust maintenance (no painting or coatings needed)
  • Weight savings in structure (easier handling vs. steel U-channels)
  • Stable under temperature swings (no dimensional creep or warping)
  • Cuts with standard tools and assembles with common fasteners (like steel)

Applications

  • Structural framing for platforms, mezzanines, equipment supports, solar panel racks
  • Edge rails and trim on flooring, decks and grating panels
  • Supports for conduit, cable ladders or pipe racks in corrosive plants
  • Guide rails, ceiling or wall purlins in corrosive or moist environments
  • Elevator or machinery guards, by lining with channel and panel

Technical Specifications

  • Available in a wide range of sizes (e.g. 50×50×5 mm up to 300×100×8 mm as per demand)
  • Typical density ~1.7–1.8 g/cm³, tensile modulus ~15–18 GPa (glass FRP)
  • Can be made to meet ASTM D4385 / BS EN 13706 requirements for sectional profiles

Unique Selling Points (USPs)

  • Long-term UV and weather resistance (surface veil protects against sun damage)
  • Dimensionally stable (does not creep under sustained loads)
  • No spark risk (important for flammable or explosive atmospheres)
