FRP Membrane Housings

FRP membrane housings are high-pressure vessels that hold reverse osmosis (RO), nanofiltration (NF) or ultrafiltration (UF) membrane elements. Fabricated from glass-fiber laminate, they combine a lightweight shell with high mechanical strength, enabling them to sustain the high pressures (300–1200 psi) required for RO processes. The FRP exterior is coated with a durable resin and gelcoat to resist corrosion, while internal seals and endcaps seal the membrane elements. These vessels are available for 2.5″, 4″ or 8″ membrane diameters, with multiple element capacities (e.g. up to 7 elements in an 8″ housing).

Key Features

  • High Pressure Rating: Handles pressures up to 1200 PSI (8.3 MPa).
  • Fiberglass Construction: Strong FRP shell resists corrosion from brackish or seawater.
  • Variety of Models: End-port and side-port connections for 2.5″, 4″, 8″ housings with 1–7 element capacity.
  • Lightweight & Durable: Easier to install than steel, yet very durable.
  • Gelcoat Finish: Painted and coated to prevent algae, UV damage, and marine fouling.
  • Flow-Optimized: Internal design minimizes pressure drop across the membrane.

Benefits

  • Corrosion Resistance: FRP resists saltwater, chlorine, acids or other cleaning chemicals, preventing rust.
  • Efficient Water Flow: Multiple ports and streamlined design ensure even flow through all elements.
  • Quick Installation: The light shell and standard flanges simplify plant piping.
  • Low Maintenance: Gelcoated interior is easy to clean and does not scale.
  • Extensive Options: Available in nearly all standard sizes and pressure classes for RO systems.

Applications

  • RO drinking water plants (municipal and residential).
  • Seawater desalination and brackish water purification.
  • Industrial process water (pharmaceuticals, electronics).
  • Wastewater reuse and zero-liquid discharge RO systems.
  • Pre-treatment/UF for membrane systems.

Technical Specifications

  • Membrane Sizes: 2.5″ dia (80–250 mm long), 4″ dia (1000–2600 mm long), 8″ dia (40″–80″ long).
  • Pressure Ratings: Common ratings 300, 450, 600, 800, 1000, 1200 psi.
  • Materials: FRP shell (fiberglass with vinylester resin); carbon-steel or FRP endcaps.
  • End Ports: ANSI class flanges or BSP/NPT connectors as required.
  • Certifications: Many meet ASTM, NSF standards for potable systems.

Unique Selling Points

  • Maximum Pressure Handling: Rated for the highest membrane pressures (up to 83 bar).
  • Wide Range: From single-element models to multi-element housings in one unit.
  • Antifouling Coating: White/blue/gray gelcoat to inhibit algae in potable water plants.
  • Long Life: Fiberglass design outlasts metal housings in corrosive service.
  • Manufacturer Brand Options: E.g. Alfa Laval (Aero), Osmonics, Pentair models available in FRP.
