Deck Boards

FRP deck boards are planks or panels designed for flooring systems such as mezzanines, balconies, catwalks, or bridge decks. They come in interlocking or butt-joint designs with built-in grooves or fasteners. Bedford Reinforced Plastics notes that their FRP deck boards “come in two systems: a 12″ wide interlocking system and a 24″ low-profile system. Both are available with nonslip surfaces” and can be installed over structurally uneven subfloors.

Key Features

  • Tongue-and-groove or snap-lock edges; UV-resistant resin with UV-transparent cover strip; integrated anti-slip surface (textured or grit); fire-resistant grades available. Often available in standard widths (12″, 24″).

Benefits

  • Straightforward installation (boards bolt or clip into structure with screws or special hardware). Long spans are possible without sag. Corrosion-proof and flame-retardant boards reduce life-cycle costs versus wood or steel decking. Minimal expansion – very stable dimensionally.

Applications

  • Overhead platforms, petestian balconies, railing copings, boat docks, exterior decks, ramp platforms. Excellent for marine, coastal, or harsh-weather decks since they won’t rot or corrode.

Technical Specifications

  • Profiles usually 1″–1.5″ thick; lengths up to 24′. Load ratings often exceed code for pedestrian loading; thermal expansion coefficients low (~1/10 of wood). Meets ASTM E108 Class A for flame spread when specified.

Unique Selling Points (USPs)

  • Deck boards can be offered in solid colors or weathered-wood looks. They allow for drainage channels underneath. FRP deck systems reduce slipping and water retention (no splintering). The lightweight boards allow installation without heavy cranes.
